Hello, welcome to my home page. My name is Susan Fadler. I love to write and I have always loved to tell stories. I have made an attempt in writing my first novel and I enjoyed it very much.
I called my novel Skinwalker; a story of a being filled with malice and mischief, who as a matter of fact, is still a very real enity in the minds of the local people. He is the bearer and cause of misfortune, loss, pain and death. This terrifying Navajo legend is as alive and real today as it was 400 years old.
Skinwalker the novel, is a story directly from my imagination but is certainly wrought from experiences we had as a family when we lived on the Navajo Reservation. I must say that experiences were had one could not easily explain. Experiences which changed my way of thinking. Are there things in this world that cannot be explained? I can say that I belive there are and that the Reservation can be a mystical place, especially in the belief in magic, spells, witchcraft and evil forces. Literally there were times that feelings of fear stemmed from occurances my emotions and own beliefs told me was not possible, but yet happened, and it stirred my blood. My horizons had certainly been expanded.
Skinwalker is a work of fiction, yet it is based on believable true western historical legend and background. Skinwalker is absolute legend, but, as legends go, the tales of Skinwalkers have found their way into history with grains of truth gleaned from personal experiences related which hold no rational explanation. Truly it is one of the scariest things you could ever imagine.
Readers have commented, "this could have really happened."
A legend always begins with truth ~ Skinwalker is one of those legends ~ and this is my version. ~ Susan

"Skinwalker is a well written, action packed history-based novel centered on the beliefs and superstitions of the Navajo Indians. The author blends accurate historical research with a story line that keeps the reader wanting to know what will happen next. The main character, Alex, is cool, calm, and somewhat mysterious. There were times that this reader even felt that perhaps Alex was the "Skinwalker" and the action was an internal conflict as he tried to destroy the demons within himself. However, those thoughts were dashed as the ending clears up that misconception. But, that was one of the many good things about the book, it wasn't always apparent where the plot was heading, so the suspense was captivating and continuous. "
"I really liked this book so much that I shared it with my sister. The plot flowed very well that I was able to keep up with the changing scenes. I love romances and this was no exception to my surprise. I liked that the author included alot of historical facts of the time which enhanced the flavor of the book. "

A little background information to help you understand the story line in the novel:
Skinwalker the novel, is set in the old West just prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Arizona was a lawless territory. Roads were built bringing more and more Whites into the territory, most just passing through, but a number of them stayed in search of the new gold and silver strikes. John Butterfield had won his Mail contract from St. Joe, Missouri to Sacramento Calif., which would bring US Mail and more passengers into the Territory.
Silver had been mined in Arizona for centuries, the Jesuits found an especially rich deposit in the Santa Rita Mountains near Tubac in the 1600's. The mine had been lost for over a century until Charles Posten reopened it. This mine was filled with salt and percolating water resulting in what is referred to as Horn Silver which is often seeped with mercury. Beautiful and translucent, Horn Silver is named for the tiny wires of silver that twist and twine inside making it appear like a Ram's horn. This has always been sacred to the native people and they have used the crystals, even today, in many ceremonies. This is the silver that William Greene wins in his Monte Game.
What no one is aware of is that a Skinwalker keeps this unique silver sacred and protects it with a vengeance. Young half-breed Alex McCallister finds a man who had been killed in a most horrific way, skinned, and beheaded; his body left near this mine. Alex seeks the advise and help of Gopan, a trusted Medicine Man of his tribe and has his worst fears realized. This was the work of a Skinwalker, a fearsome man-thing that uses black magic and powerful plants to subdue and torture the unsuspecting.
Lacey Greene, daughter of William Greene, is a young woman not quite eighteen, summoned to Arizona by her father to claim her inheritance. She had not seen her father since a small child and had been living with her Uncle and Aunt in Boston. She is traveling with her spirited Irish maid when they get themselves into trouble at the Western Butterfield stage stop at Fort Yuma, the last post in California. Alex comes along just in time and rescues them from a brutal encounter. This was the first meeting that was to occur between them.
Alex has always been pretty much of a loner, preferring the companionship of his animals friends over humans. He travels with a wolf, one that Alex rescued as a cub from bounty hunters. The wolf stays close to Alex and plays a pivotal role in the book. Alex feels that he and the wolf are much the same, both of them are hated and misunderstood. He leaves Fort Yuma with the Skinwalker still troubling him. He wonders what a young woman was doing all alone in the wilds of this rugged land? Who would leave her?
Alex is on his way to bring meat to his mother's aging matricidal clan up in the Pinalano Mountains, only to find that scalpers had arrived at the campsite first and had killed the entire clan taking scalps, noses, and other body parts to sell for bounty. He tracks the scalpers into the Dragoons Mountains and discovers that the Skinwalker has crossed their path. Finding a place of bones, an eerie place that is filled with many bones and body parts scattered all around. Alex finds some of the scalpers who met their deaths in a terrible way. He is stunned by what he sees and remembers Gopan's warnings, but he continues on after the remaining scalpers with just one thing in mind, to kill them all.
The Civil War breaks out and Alex is caught up in the only battle that happens in the Arizona frontier at Pichaco Peak. Alex finds William Greene at the battle, wounded. Greene is carrying some valuable information that could help the Union win the war and Alex is pressed into service by General John Carleton. Carleton wants Alex to befriend Greene and find the silver mine that Greene owns. Only problem is that neither the army nor Alex has any idea that the Skinwalker has been drawn to the ranch as well. Alex finds that he must protect the woman that he has fallen in love with from this man-thing who becomes fixated on Lacey.
Skinwalker, the Novel, is highly entertaining and filled with suspense, intrigue, mystery, Indian mysticism, murder and romance! A MUST read!
